THE NATURE OF ORGANIC MATERIALS
Materials sourced from pristine natural resources are the pinnacle of furniture quality. The nature of organic materials makes them imperfect. Stone pieces may display natural mineral deposits, swirling, joint lines, veining, or other features that will add character to your piece without affecting its quality or performance. Artisan crafted furnishings made from natural wood and with hand-applied finishes may vary in colour, pattern, shape, and texture – making each truly unique.
The nature of these materials also mean they may change over time. For instance, natural wood may display small splits, knots, joint lines, or other features that will add character to your piece without affecting its quality or performance.
CHOOSING WHERE TO PLACE YOUR ITEM
Ensure your furniture sits in a level position. Frames, for example, tend to warp if left on an uneven surface.
Avoid placing indoor furnishings in direct sunlight or near sources of heat or moisture, as this could cause cracking or changes in finish. If your piece is close to a radiator, we recommend you never rest it directly on the radiator as this could overheat or scorch the materials.
Always lift furniture when moving. Never drag, as this could loosen joinery and damage your piece. Take extra care with stone items that can be especially heavy. Lift items correctly to protect your back.
We recommend anti-tip straps for anything that could fall down or be pushed.
STONE CARE
Stone furniture brings depth and dimension to any home. The natural texture and grain of stone make it an excellent choice for adding natural elements into your space. Stone is porous in nature, which means it is able to absorb moisture. Different types of stone will have different rates of absorption. Any stone exposed to moisture is at risk of staining, mould, and premature wearing.
How to clean and protect stone furniture:
- Stone surfaces can be easily cleaned with non-corrosive, non-abrasive cleaning agents.
- Dust natural stone with a soft, ever-so lightly damp – do not overdo it, only a tiny bit of moisture is needed – lint-free cloth and finish with a dry cloth.
- Occasionally clean using cleaning agents specifically designed for stone. Follow instructions carefully.
- Avoid contact with excessive moisture. Wipe-up spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth.
- Never place hot dishes directly on finished surfaces due to scorching hazards. Similarly, prolonged use of hot electrical equipment may also cause scorching.
WOOD CARE
Solid wood is timeless. When looked after properly, it will last for generations. As the wood smooths from gentle use and age it adds charm and character to your space.
Any furniture made from natural wood may alter slightly as temperature and humidity cause the wood to expand and contract. This is normal and should be expected from season to season, depending on climate and the temperature fluctuation within your home.
To ensure your piece ages gracefully we recommend you read the following advice from our workshop team.
How to clean and protect wood furniture:
- Use a barely damp microfibre cloth to remove any dust or debris from table bases as and when required.
- Do not clean using care products containing ammonia or silicone, as they can damage metal finishes. For best results, use a certified wood cleaner and ensure you follow use instructions carefully. Do not over apply.
- Avoid using abrasives or harsh, corrosive chemicals as these could scratch or mark surfaces.
- Avoid using window cleaner or cleaning agents containing lemon, vinegar, or other acids as these could cause damage to stone surfaces. If you choose to use natural cleaning methods, we recommend using hot water and a tiny drop of olive oil. We also recommend you test a small area first.
- Never place hot dishes directly on finished surfaces due to scorching hazards. Similarly, prolonged use of hot electrical equipment may also cause scorching.
- Protect surfaces from incidental marks (like scratching, scorching, and water marks) by using coasters, trivets, felt pads, and non-plastic mats.
